Special Olympics

Generally, Special Olympics is for individuals 8 and over with mental retardation or cognitive delays. Some individuals with autism have participated in Special Olympics; it varies from one location to another. More information about Special Olympics may be found at http://www.specialolympicsva.org. CHESTERFIELD:

Sports offered: roller skating, snow skiing, golf, ice skating, track and field, aquatics and tennis as well as unified (partnered) team sports such as soccer, volleyball, basketball, softball, and bowling. Unified sports is an inclusive program that pairs individuals w/ disabilities (athletes) and their peers w/out disabilities (partners) in the same teams to train and compete

RICHMOND
The Special Olympics Virginia Urban Programs has developed, organized and implemented a local program within the City of Richmond for persons having mental retardation. We provide year round sports training and local athletic competition in a variety of Olympic-type sports for individuals having mental retardation, specifically to: 1) students that attend Richmond Public Schools, 2) adults living in group or residential homes within the City of Richmond, and 3) other Richmond city residents.
