Special Education Advisory Committee Calendar
Special Education Advisory Committees (SEACs) are provided for through Virginia’s special education regulations. Every
school district must have a SEAC that meets regularly. The function of the advisory committee is to:
- advise the school division of the unmet needs in the education of children with disabilities
- assist the school division in the formulation and development of plans for improving the performance of children with disabilities
- participate in the development of priorities and strategies for meeting the identified needs of children with disabilities
- submit periodic reports and recommendations regarding the education of children with disabilities to the division superintendent for transmission to the local school board
- assist the local school division in interpreting plans to the community for meeting the special needs of children with disabilities for educational services and
- review the policies and procedures for the
provision of special education and related services to the local school
board and the Virginia department of Education.
SEACs may be composed of family members of students with
disabilities, individuals w/ disabilities, and community members
who are appointed to serve by the local school board;
employees of local school divisions do not serve on the SEACs
but may serve as consultants to the SEACs. Meetings are held
regularly, are free and open to the public, and usually have a
time specified for individuals wishing to give public comment.
SEACs want to hear from families about success or challenges
that their child experiences in the school system. Get involved –
