6th Annual 5K Run/Walk for Autism Raises Community AwarenessThis year’s 5K Run/Walk for Autism, held on Saturday, May 24th, was a huge success. It was our biggest turnout ever with about 1,000 runners pre-registered for the race and 350 more registering on-site. New to the run this year was the addition of teams and exhibitors, both adding much to event. We are very grateful to Rob Cardwell of our local CBS affiliate WTVR for once again hosting our run. We would also like to extend our appreciation to the Richmond Road Runners, Henrico County Police Department and the Tuckahoe Rescue Squad for ensuring that we had a certified and safe event. We, of course, could not do this without our volunteers, sponsors and contributors; we are very grateful for the outpouring of support we received this year. The volunteers began unloading trucks at 5 am and worked tirelessly through the morning. We would also like to extend a huge thank you to the run committee who worked all year planning the event including Pat Weaver (and her entire family), Julie Scott, Tina Wright, Jodie Stevens, Cary Houseman, Phillip Link and Dianne Corsello. A big thank you also goes to the students in the vocational education class at Deep Run High School for helping with the registration bags and to the Deep Run Key Club for providing volunteers on race day. We also want to thank our sponsors and exhibitors. Without their support, the run would not be possible. The run this year was especially festive with the addition of exhibitors, face painters, karate demonstrations and many other diversions for the whole family. And, of course, the fantastic door prizes continue to be a hit. Again, thanks to everyone who made this run a successful autism awareness event for the whole community. The final tally of funds raised will be published in the August newsletter. |
